Brute (2023) a video documentation of an endurance performance from November 2021.

The video "Brute" from 2023 shows a performance from 2021 in which the artist performs an endurance performance over several hours involving a massive 325 kg wax candle in the colours of the German national flag.

It shows how an arsenal of tools is used to change the block. First, the candle burns with 11 wicks, as a commemoration of the dead in Halle 2019 and Hanau 2020. Then the smooth, even surface is scratched with sharp tools, followed by attempts to penetrate the material with other tools, including drilling holes and stuffing them again. The whole process is obviously painstaking.

The artist's breathing becomes heavier and more frustrated as time goes on and her movements become more hurried.

She continues to work on the candle with full physical effort, but it hardly changes. Towards the end of the performance, it is disappointingly accepted that the endeavour is too difficult and the candle outlasts the work and effort.

The manipulation of the block of wax represents a visual depiction in which the racialised self attempts to find access to the German majority society, but encounters hurdles and ultimately supposedly fails.

Most of the close-ups anonymise the artist, who deliberately makes herself liable to prosecution by defacing the flag. These images are accompanied by the sounds of the tools and the chipped material. Similar to ASMR, these sounds are intended to trigger a sense of comfort in the viewer, while the subject matter can be perceived as disturbing.

In memory of Halle 2019 and Hanau 2020.
